Parenting in the 90's: Same Mission, Different Strategies

The basic mission of human parents has always been to protect, nurture and prepare the next generation of humankind. Without protection young children will not survive. Without a nurturing environment children will not thrive. Without adequate learning of skills and information about life, children will have trouble adapting and coping with the world outside their family. So this mission continues to provide the core tasks of raising children. What is different for today's parents are the strategies needed to carry out this job of protecting, nurturing and preparing their children.

the parents of the 90's are at least 20 years old and most are in their 30s. Even twenty years ago parents (much less their children) did not have personal computers, faxes, cell phones, cordless phones, beepers, videos, CD's, unrestricted television programming, the Internet, e-mail, virtual reality, ATM's or electronic day keepers. More often than not our children are far more adept at using these forms of communication than we are. Consequently the very technology that was designed to connect us more closely can also widen the gap between us as many low tech parents can only watch while their children disappear into a world of high tech. The gap has intensified the traditional belief of children that parents are "old fogies who don't know what they are talking about." The gap has also resulted in many parents feeling less able to "keep up" and communicate with their own children. As one teenager said to me recently: "Why listen to Mom when I have the whole Internet?"
