A STRATEGY FOR SUCCESS
by
Eileen Mullady, Head of School, Horace Mann, and Special Advisor to the Parents League

Do something for yourself, do something for someone else, play really hard, and work just as hard toward independence. That has long been my advice to students seeking wisdom about a "school plan" or strategy for succeeding in middle school, high school, or college.

"Is it good enough just to take care of yourself?"

What does it mean to do something for yourself? It means follow an interest, a passion, something that you love to do. Write poetry, play the drums, take photographs, design solar houses, run cross country, study three languages. Passions don't need to lead anywhere, because they give us reason to get up every day. They develop early, and schools are perfect breeding grounds.

OUR MISSION: There are many ways parents can get information that will help them during their 18-year (or so) odyssey with their children -- the park bench, guidebooks, friends, forums, support groups, educational consultants. But how do you separate rumor from reality? The Parents League is a non-profit organization of parents and independent schools offering all families with children, toddlers through teens, current information on education, entertainment and enrichment opportunities. For 86 years, it has earned the reputation for being a vital resource for New York parents. Ashton & Weinberg, City Baby, A Resource For New York Parents
